Seattle & Long Island
The Roundtable’s regular summer meeting convened in Seattle to look at what lies ahead and how the world of work is changing for our graduates. Futurist Gary Marx (author of “Sixteen Trends…”) got us off to an excellent start. Roundtable members next visited Microsoft’s Office and Home of the Future, before meeting with Boeing officials to examine how systems thinking had helped transform corporate culture and create a new operations center to help airlines keep planes in service. Next they visited Boeing to learn about the complexities of assembling the first 787 (The Dreamliner), and rounded out the meeting with a light dinner cruise as night fell on the lakes in Seattle.
Next stop: Long Island to look into systems thinking. Beginning with a tour of the Cradle of Aviation, the Roundtable then heard from Michael Usdan (Institute of Educational Leadership) on the outlook for federal education policy, before spending two days with Peter Senge (author of The Fifth Discipline) discussing systems thinking. Part of the time with Senge was spent with student leaders at Hewlett High School. Final stop, a cruise on Long Island Sound.
